Professor of Computational Aerothermal Design at Cambridge University

Prof Graham Pullan, Professor of Computational Aerothermal Design at the University of Cambridge.

He completed his PhD in 2001 at the Whittle Laboratory and has continued his research there – first as the Rolls-Royce/Trinity Hall Research Fellow (until 2008) and then as a member of the academic team. His research is focussed on the three-dimensional aerodynamic design of turbomachinery, and on the development of the computional methods required to achieve this. He has received: the 2012 ASME Gas Turbine Award; ASME IGTI Best Paper Awards in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016; the 2013 Rolls-Royce Howes Ruffles prize.

Main Research interests

Graham’s research is focussed on the three-dimensional aerodynamic design of turbomachinery, and on the development of the computational methods required to achieve this. His research on hardware accelerated CFD (using Graphics Processing Units) has led to recent projects on stall inception mechanisms in compressors and fans, and design optimisation of novel turbine concepts. Graham’s projects also involve a range of experimental approaches from low to high speed, stationary and rotating, with improvements in design being the common objective.
